The FLOSS Pattern! Do You Know This Spelling Rule?

You get spelling rule # 4 today, BUT there are so many more!  This one is easy and fun and who doesn’t like a bonus??  Anything that we can repeat, really seems to make things easier, right?

Anna Gillingham calls adding a bonus letter to /f/, /l/, /s/ ( and sometimes /z/) the FLOSS Pattern.  That stands for f..l..or s   “floss”.

Some people like to come up with their own acronym explanation.  Maybe you could help students remember this rule by saying, “Fuzzy Lizards Sleep in the Zoo 

Why do we say sometimes /z/?  It’s because some words like buzz and jazz have the bonus letter, yet other words like quiz does not.

Take a look at what the Floss Pattern looks like!

Teach this spelling rule and you’ll get much better spellers in a flash!

You take care and I’ll see you next time!
