The Best Reading Program for Students Who Need a Whole Word Approach!

The Best Reading Program for Students Who Need a Whole Word Approach!

Finding the right curriculum for a student is one of the most important keys to academic success.  The hard part is finding good options for your students because not all students learn in the same way.

I was once told by our district’s reading specialist that no matter what reading curriculum is selected to use for students in the general education classrooms, there will be approximately 20% of those students who will struggle with that approach to reading, decoding and comprehension.  That means that the other 20% need a different kind of program.

A similar dilemma occurs with our students who have special needs. Not everyone would be successful if we just offered one option to teaching reading.  Luckily, we have options and they are really good options.  Today I wanted to share with you the option we use for those students who struggle with a phonics approach to reading.

Take a look!

As I mentioned in the video, this program can be helpful for students who have moderate, or mild cognitive delays or even some with a learning disability.  It is beyond thrilling when we see how well some of our students can do with this program.  Keep in mind also that just because you begin with a whole word approach to reading, it doesn’t mean that your student will never be able to learn some phonics rules to assist in decoding.

If you have other programs that have been wildly successful for your students, I’d love to know about your experiences!

You take care and I’ll see you next time.
