I have people ask me on a regular basis what they can do for a child with oppositional defiant disorder. There are many things that you can try, but I wanted to point out today that there is one thing that you are probably already using that just might come in handy for your child with ODD.
Take a look!
You can have First/Then preprinted or you can quickly write this on a piece of paper or a white board. It’s portable, it’s simple, and it’s easy to understand. Even our students with low cognitive abilities can understand this limit setting visual.
You can find this visual already made for you if you go to the Hamilton-Boone-Madison Special Services Cooperative website. Click on the tab that says “HBM Supports” on the left side of the home page. Under that tab you will see “autism resources”. That will open up to a page that has options. Click on “Visual Supports for School”.
Once you open this up, you will see a whole page of already made for you visuals including First/Then!!! These visual supports are free to anyone so enjoy this material.
You will find other visual supports there as well that can help your student with ODD. Things like, a visual schedule, the Incredible 5 point scale, and classroom procedures.
It’s a new school year, so now is the time to get your visuals together and this is a place that offers these goodies at no charge to you….and they’re in color!!!
Hope you enjoy these tools. Have a great start to your school year!
Take care and I’ll see you next time!
P.S. I’m LOVING my new job with Westfield Washington Schools! What an amazing place to work!
