When I work with children who are nonverbal and on the autism spectrum or who have a moderate or severe cognitive disorder…..Guess what the two main things are that parents want….

They want their child to have self help skills and COMMUNICATION SKILLS.

That’s right. If you do nothing else for a child like this, these skills are GOLDEN.

In today’s video, I discuss where to start with developing those communication skills. Let’s put it this way, if you don’t start at the beginning, your student will spend a lot of time being frustrated and perhaps acting out just because the cornerstone of communication has not been established.

Take a look at today’s video and see if you know what this cornerstone of communication is!!!

A little tip or mantra that I have for you that fits in with today’s subject is this.   I tell students who are acting out, throwing themselves on the floor, throwing things, or being aggressive toward me the following”

“I’m not going to listen to your body communicate with me, I’m only going to listen to your words. So use your words and tell me what you want.”

I hope you got some rest for the holiday and you are ready for a great week!!!

Take care and I’ll see you next time!
