Before you mount a posse to come and get me, let me explain! What I want to say is, I’m suggesting that you stop doing circle time they way you’ve done it in the past if you have not included the following three things:

  • Make your activity interesting and surprising
  • Allow interaction from the children
  • Include rich language concepts and vocabulary

Check out this week’s video to see my wild, fun, and a bit outrageous activity that includes all three of these components.

My mantra is this. If I’m having fun, the kids are having fun. I can tell you if you are bored, so are the kids.

To be fair I have seen some teachers do INCREDIBLE circle time activities that incorporates all three points in my criteria, however I have seen countless circle time activities that are unexciting, not interactive, and rarely if ever move forward with language and vocabulary to enrich the students.

This week’s video is just the first of three videos I’m doing for you to give you examples of what I think a great circle time should look like. I guess I could call this my “I hate circle time series” but that sounds so negative.

I’m just on a campaign to make the most of this morning meeting that nearly every special education teacher who teaches Early Childhood students or students with moderate/severe cognitive abilities does. Whether you call it “circle time”(for younger students) or your “morning meeting” (for older students) please, please ask yourself these questions.

1. Am I exposing my students to new, useful language and vocabulary?

2. Would I be excited to sit through my own circle time activity?

3. How do I feel when someone else does all the talking and I have to just sit?

One of my former jobs as an SLP was working in several Early Childhood classrooms. I was in each classroom for an entire half day each week. Each week I requested to take over “circle time” so that I could demonstrate to teachers how they could infuse rich language/vocabulary into the activities.

Each week, the teachers and I would decide what part of the students’ goals we wanted to address and then I’d design an activity around those goals and include them in circle time.

I had a BLAST coming up with fun, crazy, exciting stuff for the kids. I had both teachers and instructional assistants telling me that they couldn’t wait to see what I was going to do each week.

Now that’s a good sign! If the adults were engaged and having fun, what do you think the students were experiencing.   I could hold the attention of three year olds with special needs for 30 to 40 minutes!!! Not only were they paying attention, they were communicating, learning new vocabulary and experiencing language concepts like prepositions and opposites.

I had a dad who had observed my activities several times and his comment to me was, “I don’t know who has more fun, you or my son!”

For me, that was the ultimate compliment!

My challenge to you is to just give it a try. Be creative, put your personality into it! As long as you are meeting your children’s goals, have fun!

Take care and I’ll see you next time!!!
